Visible clues the tool compares

  • Whole profile, rim, foot and handle shape
  • Mould seams, base finish and visible tool marks
  • Cut, pressed, etched, painted or applied-looking decoration
  • Readable maker marks, labels and signatures

Photograph the object before assigning an age

Start with a full side view and an unobstructed view of the base. Photograph marks separately under gentle light. Colour alone does not establish a maker, and a pontil-like mark or seam needs context rather than an automatic antique label.

Separate glassmaking clues from attribution

The analysis describes features it can see and suggests comparison leads. Pressed patterns can be copied, decoration can be added later, and a signature needs verification. Record uncertain letters exactly instead of expanding a partial mark into a confident maker name.

Compare like with like

Use museum or maker-catalogue examples with the same form, size, pattern and base construction. A matching general colour or silhouette is a starting point. Keep measurements, provenance and older photos with your research notes.

Keep fragile glass intact

Do not grind, scratch, heat or chemically test glass to answer a photo question. Avoid cleaning a fragile label or painted decoration. Important age, composition, insurance or sale decisions need a qualified appraiser or conservator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this prove my glass is antique?

No. It suggests visible clues and research leads. Dating, attribution, glass composition and value may require documentation and professional examination.

What happens if the image is unclear?

The result should explain what is missing and suggest a better view. A broad shortlist or an inconclusive result is appropriate when the photo cannot separate lookalikes.

Do I need to use a camera?

No. Choose an existing photo from your device. The tool uses the photo you select and does not require a live camera feed.

Is this photo check free?

A limited daily allowance is available through the web tool. The upload flow shows an allowance or limit message; this is separate from the mobile app.
